Paranormal romance writing picture prompts

Paranormal romance is one of the best selling genres of the romance sub categories. The idea of Dracula giving up his immortal life for the love of Mia, has tantalised us for generations and is quite possibly the oldest example of a paranormal romance, right up there with Carmilla, the female vampire who seduced a young woman written back in 1871(before bran stroker wrote a word of Dracula ) Both of these stories turn what was previously considered to be a monster into a sympathetic romantic lead that has stood the test of time and still draws in new audiences today .

Today we have Anne Rice, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Charlene Harris, Laurell K Hamilton and yes even Stephane Myer just to name a few writers that are carving out their own sweeping stories that bring the darker things to life in a way that both excites and thrills our notions of what romance should be.

Vampires, werewolfs, witches, ghosts, time travelers, and even aliens fill the paranormal genre which gives us writers a lot to work with as we weave our tales and spin our imagination. try some of the writing prompts below, they are meant for short stories, novels and even poetry all here to help spark that one idea within you that may lead you to your next grand adventure

Paranormal Romance writing prompts

Paranormal Romance Writing Prompts

The challenge of writing paranormal romance in a market heavily saturated with many authors all clambering to be the next Stephane Myer or Laurell.K. Hamilton (I include myself in this) is the challenge of being a fresh voice.

Write a short paranormal romance story inspired by the above picture prompt

Finding a new way to present you vampires, werewolves or witches in a way that grabs your readers attention and holds it, is critical if we are looking for success in this wonderfully fun genre.

Bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon describes the genre below well...

"Define "Paranormal", eh? Well, the Webster's dictionary defines paranormal as "not scientifically explainable". In publishing, the term has come to mean anything "other" than normal (brides, babies, cowboys, dukes, rakes, pirates). For publishing purposes Paranormal is a blanket term that covers an entire range of not necessarily related types of stories. Futuristic and SF romance and all sorts of fantasy romance, -- time travel, angels, devils, fairies, vampires, reincarnation, psychics, etc -- are published under the label of paranormal. Me, I call it "The Weird Stuff" with pride, and get a great kick out of reading and writing"

This definition gives us writers a lot of options to play with, so look outside your comfort zone, try something a little different, if you normally write about vampires try writing a short romance story involving an alien. The options really are only limited by your own imagination.

The following writing prompts below are meant to be used as a kickstart to get you the writer started on something fresh. So if it's writing block or looking for something a little new to try, why not experiment with one or more of the following story starters, themes or picture prompts below.

Writing prompts for poetry

Using creative writing prompts to inspire many forms of writing is a great way to inspire new ideas and direction in your creative journey. Many short stories, poetry and even novels have began as a writing prompt of some form or another, one of the most famous of these would be Mary Shelleys story of Frankenstien.
Mary Shelleys novel about the creation of life from the dead parts of different corpses was born out of a cold stormy night spent with Lord Byron. Who had suggested to a small group of writers that had gathered in the Villa Diodati one evening, that they try their hand at writing a ghost story .
In essence to write using a prompt given by someone else in a genre not to familiar to the young author. From this night of creative experimentation the now famous novel Frankenstien was born as was the story 'The Vampyre' written by John Polidori which would inspire the later story of Dracula written by Bram Stoker.
Writing prompts are not only to be used to break the dreaded writers block, but they can be an awesome tool to simply challenge ourselves and inspire new ideas . Why not try your hand at some of the writing prompts for poetry below. explore a genre that your not familiar with be it horror or romance or something entirely different. There are no wrong turns in our creative journey, only paths not yet travelled...

Writing prompts are a great way to inspire your creative writing today. Simply choose a writing prompt from each day, be it a daily story starter, writing theme or my personal fave the picture prompt. Spend at least ten minutes pondering what that prompt inspires in your imagination and then write.

Keep it anyway. There is often hidden pearls of ideas weaved I to such free form of writing that it may trigger you onto a new project all together .
