Horror is a feeling, it is the fear that twists out stomach and the hair rising on our necks. The dread that fills our step and the gasp of revulsion we can't hold back.

Writing for the horror and thriller genre can be often an intimidating Idea, one of the first things you need to understand about horror is that it is not always about the blood splatter or the headcount. Sometimes it can be as simple as a child's whisper "I see dead people".

At its most basic it's a story like all others, filled with tension, surprise,the right setting and of course the biggest ingredient,emotion. Some of the worlds biggest selling authors have been found in the genre of horror, from King to Barker and even children's authors such as R.L Stien.

Using creative writing prompts to inspire many forms of writing is a great way to inspire new ideas and direction in your creative journey. Many short stories, poetry and even novels have began as a writing prompt of some form or another, one of the most famous of these would be Mary Shelleys story of Frankenstien.
Mary Shelleys novel about the creation of life from the dead parts of different corpses was born out of a cold stormy night spent with Lord Byron. Who had suggested to a small group of writers that had gathered in the Villa Diodati one evening, that they try their hand at writing a ghost story .
In essence to write using a prompt given by someone else in a genre not to familiar to the young author. From this night of creative experimentation the now famous novel Frankenstien was born as was the story 'The Vampyre' written by John Polidori which would inspire the later story of Dracula written by Bram Stoker.
Writing prompts are not only to be used to break the dreaded writers block, but they can be an awesome tool to simply challenge ourselves and inspire new ideas . Writing prompts are a great way to inspire your creative writing today. Simply choose a writing prompt from each day, be it a daily story starter, writing theme or my personal fave the picture prompt. Spend at least ten minutes pondering what that prompt inspires in your imagination and then write.
Write without editing yourself, try and focus on the ever evolving story and words as they come to you. It is great way to free your mind from doubt and if you don't like what your end result is... Having spent almost a year in a deep writing funk, I can and do truly stand by the use of writing prompts. There are of course other ways to kick start your imagination but when i've have been lost in writers block for several months I personally found the use of the old fashioned writers prompt to be more than just useful in getting me writing again, they have sparked by next novel idea.
