When writing horror there are so many things to consider. What are your readers meant to be afraid of? do your readers care about your characters ? and what is truly scary?

Horror writing legend Stephen king has stated in the past that there is only three types of terror.

“The 3 types of terror:
The Gross-out: the sight of a severed head tumbling down a flight of stairs, it's when the lights go out and something green and slimy splatters against your arm.
The Horror: the unnatural, spiders the size of bears, the dead waking up and walking around, it's when the lights go out and something with claws grabs you by the arm. And the last and worse one:
Terror, when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute. It's when the lights go out and you feel something behind you, you hear it, you feel its breath against your ear, but when you turn around, there's nothing there...”

When writing Horror remember what it is that scares you, what makes your heart pound a little quicker in the dark. What makes you hesitate. What sense's do you r

R.L Stien Said
“There’s no formula. I think you have to create a very close point of view. You have to be in the eyes of the narrator. Everything that happens, all the smells, all the sounds; then your reader starts to identify with that character and that’s what makes something really scary.”

Horror can be one of the most rewarding genres to write for, with so many twists and turns and emotional range to choose from it gives us writers immense range to draw from

Paranormal Romance Writing Prompts

Paranormal romance has been popular for many years. The ability to sink into a romance filled with mysterious and taboo characters hasn't lost its appeal to readers. In fact it is still one of the biggest sellers in the world.

New Writing Prompts To Come!

With the rise of the corona-virus a lot of us are now staying at home, self isolation and social distancing. It is a scary time for sure, no matter what country we are in.

For those of you that have visited my pages here before I am sure you have noticed my absence over the last few years. I have been busy working on a series of books as well as other various online jobs. but as I too am now staying at home to protect my family I thought it would be a great time to come back to these pages and share again my love of writing and writing prompts.
So lets use this time to explore new ideas, new genres of writing and find a way to turn this time into something practical by following our passion

In the past I have encouraged sharing our writing but have faced a few technical issues in making that happen easily. I will be looking at being able to do that again in the next few weeks as I think writers benefit with sharing their work with like minded people. but I will touch on that at a later date.

So please join me over the next few weeks as I will be posting daily here on this blog as well as on  my facebook page. If you have any requests or would like a new genre added to our prompts please leave a comment or message me directly.

Paranormal romance writing picture prompts

Paranormal romance is one of the best selling genres of the romance sub categories. The idea of Dracula giving up his immortal life for the love of Mia, has tantalised us for generations and is quite possibly the oldest example of a paranormal romance, right up there with Carmilla, the female vampire who seduced a young woman written back in 1871(before bran stroker wrote a word of Dracula ) Both of these stories turn what was previously considered to be a monster into a sympathetic romantic lead that has stood the test of time and still draws in new audiences today .

Today we have Anne Rice, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Charlene Harris, Laurell K Hamilton and yes even Stephane Myer just to name a few writers that are carving out their own sweeping stories that bring the darker things to life in a way that both excites and thrills our notions of what romance should be.

Vampires, werewolfs, witches, ghosts, time travelers, and even aliens fill the paranormal genre which gives us writers a lot to work with as we weave our tales and spin our imagination. try some of the writing prompts below, they are meant for short stories, novels and even poetry all here to help spark that one idea within you that may lead you to your next grand adventure

Writing prompts for horror

Horror is a feeling, it is the fear that twists out stomach and the hair rising on our necks. The dread that fills our step and the gasp of revulsion we can't hold back.

Writing for the horror and thriller genre can be often an intimidating Idea, one of the first things you need to understand about horror is that it is not always about the blood splatter or the headcount. Sometimes it can be as simple as a child's whisper "I see dead people".

At its most basic it's a story like all others, filled with tension, surprise, the right setting and of course the biggest ingredient, emotion. Some of the worlds biggest selling authors have been found in the genre of horror, from King to Barker and even children's authors such as R.L Stien.

Face what scares you, grasp the "what if" of the dark and write. There are over 40 horror writing prompts here on this page to get you started. From the story starters, themes and of course picture prompts

and oblivion.”

—Clive Barker

Edgar Allan Poe

Paranormal Romance writing prompts

Paranormal Romance Writing Prompts

The challenge of writing paranormal romance in a market heavily saturated with many authors all clambering to be the next Stephane Myer or Laurell.K. Hamilton (I include myself in this) is the challenge of being a fresh voice.

Write a short paranormal romance story inspired by the above picture prompt

Finding a new way to present you vampires, werewolves or witches in a way that grabs your readers attention and holds it, is critical if we are looking for success in this wonderfully fun genre.

Bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon describes the genre below well...

"Define "Paranormal", eh? Well, the Webster's dictionary defines paranormal as "not scientifically explainable". In publishing, the term has come to mean anything "other" than normal (brides, babies, cowboys, dukes, rakes, pirates). For publishing purposes Paranormal is a blanket term that covers an entire range of not necessarily related types of stories. Futuristic and SF romance and all sorts of fantasy romance, -- time travel, angels, devils, fairies, vampires, reincarnation, psychics, etc -- are published under the label of paranormal. Me, I call it "The Weird Stuff" with pride, and get a great kick out of reading and writing"

This definition gives us writers a lot of options to play with, so look outside your comfort zone, try something a little different, if you normally write about vampires try writing a short romance story involving an alien. The options really are only limited by your own imagination.

The following writing prompts below are meant to be used as a kickstart to get you the writer started on something fresh. So if it's writing block or looking for something a little new to try, why not experiment with one or more of the following story starters, themes or picture prompts below.
